Making tough lineup decisions each week can be the most challenging part of the fantasy football process. When you're torn between two similar players and simply don't know which to start, start the player with the superior matchup.

Ah, but exactly how does one determine the best (and worst) weekly matchups?

Week 1 is the toughest week as far as evaluating matchups. It's commonplace for fantasy analysis to rely heavily upon the previous year's statistics, even though that completely ignores how quickly and dramatically this game changes, especially over a seven-month offseason.

The matchup rankings provide a schedule-independent method to evaluate positional matchups each week, ranking all 32 opposing defenses in order of most to least favorable for opposing players at all four skill positions (quarterback, running back, wide receiver and tight end). Instead of relying upon seasonal totals, we calibrate points-allowed data to show how each defense fared relative to the difficulty of the schedule it has faced. This provides a fairer approach to judging the quality of individual matchups.

For the first three weeks, these rankings account for two things: My own opinion of the strength of that matchup, and what ESPN's projections tell us about that matchup. As an additional reference point, 2025 full-season data is provided.

"Adj. FPA," or Adjusted Fantasy Points Allowed, reflects how far above or below players' weekly PPR fantasy point averages that defense held opponents at that position. A positive number means that the matchup is favorable; a negative number means it is unfavorable. Additionally, remember teams often use multiple running backs and wide receivers in a game, and these plus/minus averages cover all of a team's personnel at that position.

Finally, a caveat: Matchups are only one ingredient in my rankings formula. Not every favorable matchup should be exploited, nor unfavorable matchup avoided. If you want my -- and ESPN fantasy staff's -- most complete source for whom to start and sit each week, consult our weekly rankings.

Quarterbacks

Matchups highlight: Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (at Cincinnati Bengals). Mayfield draws an all-around outstanding fantasy matchup, facing a weaker defense in a game with prospective pass-friendly game flow, as Buccaneers-Bengals began Week 1 with the highest over/under. The Bengals finished 2025 the sixth most-favorable matchup for quarterbacks, and while they added DTs Jonathan Allen and Dexter Lawrence and DE Boye Mafe during the offseason, they still have a long way to go to straighten out a unit that posted the league's worst pass rush rate. Mayfield is a high-end superflex/QB2 with top-10 positional scoring potential for Week 1.

Others to like: Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers (vs. Arizona Cardinals); Kyler Murray, Minnesota Vikings (vs. Green Bay Packers).

Matchup to avoid: Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs (vs. Denver Broncos). Credit Mahomes for working hard to get himself back into the lineup in time for Week 1, nine months to the date that he tore both the ACL and LCL in his left knee in a Week 15 game last season. Nevertheless, he's unlikely to display the level of mobility he did pre-injury, at least in the early weeks, and he faces one of his worst matchups all season in his first game back. Only five times in 2025 did the Broncos afford a quarterback more than 15 fantasy points in a game, and they return largely the same defense this year, with the most prominent exception the departure of DE John Franklin-Myers.

Running backs

Matchups highlight: Omarion Hampton, Chargers (vs. Cardinals). He's in a situation conducive to a major breakthrough, with limited competition behind him in the banged-up Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal, and a running back-friendly offensive coordinator in Mike McDaniel. Hampton should see a massive workload in this home game which featured the week's widest opening spread (-10), while facing a defense that was the fourth-worst against the position in 2025. The Cardinals allowed 11 games of 15-plus fantasy points to running backs all of last season, and five of those came in the final six weeks alone.

Others to like: Breece Hall, New York Jets (at Tennessee Titans); Kenny Gainwell, Buccaneers (at Bengals); Mike Washington Jr., Las Vegas Raiders (vs. Miami Dolphins).

Matchup to avoid: MarShawn Lloyd, Packers (at Vikings). There's a lot to like about Lloyd's season-long fantasy prospects following Josh Jacobs' placement on the Commissioner's Exempt List, and unsurprisingly, over the past month, no player improved more in terms of ADP than the 25-year-old speedster (up from the undrafted pool and into the 10th round). That said, Lloyd is no guarantee to see the level of usage we've come to expect from a typical feature back, and Chris Brooks appears likely to handle a good amount of three-down work. Considering this matchup, against a Vikings defense that allowed only six games of 15-plus fantasy points to the position in all of 2025, it's best to leave this backfield to the fantasy sidelines for future evaluation during the opening week.

Wide receivers

Matchups highlight: Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina Panthers (vs. Chicago Bears). He was one of last season's more underrated wide receivers, the No. 16 scorer at his position despite playing for what was the league's sixth-worst overall offense. McMillan now kicks off his sophomore year facing a defense that, despite boasting a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback in Jaylon Johnson, struggled mightily against opposing wide receivers last season. Teams' No. 1 wide receivers on the whole averaged nearly three full fantasy points more against the Bears in 2025 than they did in a typical week, and 11 of them (in 18 games) scored 17 or more in those contests.

Others to like: DeVonta Smith, Philadelphia Eagles (vs. Washington Commanders); Ladd McConkey, Chargers (vs. Cardinals); Tre Tucker, Raiders (vs. Dolphins).

Matchup to avoid: Terry McLaurin, Commanders (at Eagles). I'm as big a believer in a McLaurin rebound as anyone, but Week 1 doesn't seem like the time for him to begin formulating his case. He has a shaky history lining up across from Eagles All-Pro CB Quinyon Mitchell, averaging only 10.4 fantasy points and 4.8 targets in their four career games aligned against one another (including the teams' 2024 NFC Championship matchup). Additionally, the Eagles added CB Riq Woolen to strengthen their secondary during the offseason, giving them one of the league's strongest top threes at the position when including slot CB Cooper DeJean.

Tight ends

Matchups highlight: Dallas Goedert, Eagles (vs. Commanders). The Eagles' passing game matches up brilliantly on all fronts against a bad Commanders defense, but Goedert could be a particularly big factor in this contest. Projected No. 2 wide receiver Makai Lemon missed a good amount of the preseason with a hamstring issue, and his depth-chart listing as the team's primary punt returner hints he might have a limited role in the offense initially, shifting more of the focus to the tight end. Between Goedert (Week 16) and Grant Calcaterra (Week 18), Eagles starting tight ends totaled 22.3 fantasy points in their two 2025 meetings with the Commanders, who didn't improve their secondary substantially during the offseason.

Matchup to avoid: Dalton Kincaid, Bills (at Texans). The Texans allowed only three games worth more than 13 fantasy points to tight ends all of last season, and all three of them were by elite, name-brand players: Trey McBride, Brock Bowers and George Kittle. Kincaid's talent might be in the ballpark of that group, but his usage is a far cry from them. He averaged 4.17 targets per game in 2025, a number exceeded by 23 other tight ends who played in at least half their teams' games.
